IT’S CALLED PERSONAL SPACE, CJ
I’d hate to be someone who had to do these boring evening shifts in the past with no phones or whatever. That said we had no internet (yes these were the 2010s and our store/town didn’t have reliable working wifi/4G) so options were limited anyway… though that said, it definitely made the evenings worse KNOWING what everyone else was up to…
Oh snap I should have brought in a crossword puzzle or something, wow, that would have been so much better at the time… live and learn I guess

[CJ looks away dispondantly as Ash give her a look of doubt]
Ash: Still not wrong to want things cheaper.
CJ: Ugh, Sure.
[Ash brings out his phone and checks a few messages as his phone vibrates. This gains the immediate attention of CJ as she seeks to change the topic]
CJ: so... what's up with you? All alright with you girlfriend? boyfriend?
[CJ leans in far too close to Ash's personal space, causing Ash to freak out a little in reaction to her sudden interest]
Ash: No, nothing like that!
[Ash shows her the phone which has a blurry photo of a bunch of people laughing. CJ looks back puzzled, mainly at how honest and open he was at sharing his phone and his reaction to the photo]
Ash: It's my friends. They're all at a night out and - well- I'm here aren't I?
CJ: Hmmm. Makes the boring evenings like this feel a bit shit.
Ash: uh huh....
[Ash flops over the top of the counter glass, watching the one single customer idly stroll through the aisle holding a single packet of something.]
